(A Real Life Example of Inspiration..)
I often learn a good lesson - the hard
way. However, I recently learned a lot by listening to my 83
year old Father. He came for a few days visit and so, I took the time off my business to spend some great quality time with him.
As we sat at the table sharing some Organic Guacamole and Corn Chips, he began to tell me some of the stories and adventures of his life, recalling the places and times by reminiscing the era and his interesting work history.
(Some of which I recall fairly well in bits and pieces)
* And by the way ~ believe it or not, 'He is still working at 83!'.
He's a field consultant for the company he once owned.
(Dad in late 1950s)
When I was born he was a hard working Miner, then a Driller. We moved a lot. One job would end, he'd hear about another and off we'd go to the next job. They were mostly all over the West Coastal States and Nevada.
We lived in some amazingly beautiful places. Which is probably the reason I love nature and why I feel so very much at home in the country, as apposed to city life.
All these years of Dad's work experience was a great benefit. Because of his good work and networking he was offered the opportunity to work on the Government job in the 60's to assist in the building Mangla Dam in West Pakistan. He was there for approximately 6 years.
A facebook page exists for those who lived and remember it.

Eventually coming back to the U.S. he continued on to work in Construction. Landing in a Concrete Cutting business and eventually bought the business. He did very well with all he had learned from his interesting history and unique experience and perspective.
As we ate our choice snack, he started talking and I listened well as he recalled many of his life triumphs and stuggles. All of the ups - his downs. How he had it all, lost it, and how he regained his own again! He has the most amazing stories that he enjoys sharing with his kids and grand-kids.
Dad never passed up an
opportunity or doubted his ability to learn by experience, adjust and become skilled in any
opportunity he chose to tackle. He knew that with every challenge he would learn and grow.
And something he's always said is, "Anything you learn will help you in some way in the future. No matter
what it is, you can fall back on it."
Practical knowledge is very
under rated. It will always be there as a valuable source for the rest of your
life. Your experience (if
appreciated) can support and advance you when you need it most.
It doesn't matter if you're the smartest, most educated, or popular. What matters is that you never stop learning, Learn well and then apply what you have learned every chance you get.
And if you do - it will always support your efforts. Everything you've ever learned can be utilized again in another application if you pay attention and be creative.
Dad's life amazes me. People tell him to write a book of his experiences. I feel pretty blessed to get to sit and listen in person. I have a front row seat just the way I did while hearing Grandpa tell me his stories. I always loved his stories too when I was little.
Someday, I want to be 83 and have my own stories to
tell all my kids and grand-kids too.
Just think! All the consequences, situations and disasters he managed to break through and work around over the years.. and only just because he never limited his beliefs in himself or the possibilities.
He is proud of all that he's accomplished. I will always strive to do my best and have my kids to be proud of my accomplishments too!
What I heard behind his stories
was this:
Dad showed me how he imagined
his dreams as a reality. He started out to make them happen without
considering whether or not it looked like a reality at the time and without a guarantee of success.
He admitted some of it was scary, but exciting..
that he had made his mistakes along the way..
and just took each mistake as a new lesson.
Dad also said, "It was never a sure thing, but one thing was sure.."
he continued, "if you never take a chance you'll never experience the adventure!"~ Dad Believed he could - He did not pass up an opportunity.
~ He focused on learning the process and objectives
~ He created activity to support and reach his goals.
~ He constantly learned all he
could from those with the real-life experience and practical application in his
field then...
~ And he just determined to.. 'Do it!'.
